Date-stamped : 18 Oct94 - 18:22 One-Day International Series Match Three England's tour of India ended with four one-day internationals which allowed the visitors some opportunity to regain their pride. They took the chance in the third match of the series. Worn by criticism, ill-health and lack of form, Gooch dropped down the order to number six. Smith opened with Stewart, and the pair put on 42 in 10 overs before Stewart fell to Srinath. Javagal Srinath was to return his best figures in inter- national cricket, taking 3 for 16 in his first six-over spell. The newly-found confidence of Hick was the counter to Srinath, and the Worcestershire batsman hit 56 off 81 balls to give the England innings both purpose and substance. Gooch looked to be taking his side to a comfortable score, but he was bowled by Prabhakar, and DeFreitas and Jarvis went in quick succession, which meant that Malcolm had three balls to face from Kapil Dev. Had Kapil dismissed Malcolm, India would have had a full 50 overs to reach 219, but the great all-rounder bowled with a surprising lack of intelligence, and India had only 47 overs to score the runs they needed. India were to be fined for their slow over rate, but England were worse. India had an early set-back when Prabhakar was run out by Lewis' direct hit from gully, but Sidhu and Kambli seemed untroubled as they added 58. Then the introduction of Paul Jarvis turned the match completely. In his first over, the 17th, he had Kambli caught behind; in his next over, he had Azarhuddin leg before. In between, Lewis had had Tendulkar caught at slip so three wickets had fallen for six runs, and the heart of India's batting had gone. In spite of the efforts of Sidhu, Kapil Dev and Kumble, there was no reprieve as Jarvis finished with 5 for 35, the best analysis for as match between the two sides and a just reward for some fine bowling.
