Date-stamped : 28 May94 - 18:24 Sharjah Tourney: Game 1 India vs United Arab Emirates (UAE) Played at Sharjah, 13th April, 1994 INDIA BEAT DEBUTANTS UAE IN AUSTRALASIA CUP India gave debutants United Arab Emirates a lesson in the finer points of professional cricket on their way to a 71-run victory in the opening match of the Australasia Cup limited overs tourna- ment on Wednesday. The writing was on the fall for the UAE when India piled up 273 for five in their 50 overs, but the hosts performed well to fin- ish on 202 for nine against their test-playing opponents. "We have learned a few lessons which will help us prepare the team for their next clash against Pakistan," said UAE coach and former Indian test paceman Madan Lal. "Our boys did not bowl well and gave India's players enough room for scoring. And then they could not play their innings according to the situation," said Lal, adding that his team has potential. UAE started confidently with Raiz Poonawala, a former Indian Ran- ji Trophy player, cracking 22 off just 14 balls. But his impend- ing downfall was clear from the way he was hitting at every ball. He was caught behind by Nayan Mongia, who finished with four catches. After opener Azhar Saeed went for three, making UAE 26 for two, Mazhar Hussain and Vijay Mehra, picking the right ball to hit, put on 94 for the third wicket. Both fell seeking to meet an increasing asking rate, Mehra scor- ing 43 with the help of six fours, while Hussain weighed in with a solid 70 in 112 balls which included five fours. UAE needed to score at 10 an over in the last 10 overs, a task clearly beyond the inexperienced team. India were earlier given a flying start when Sachin Tendulkar, enjoying his new role as opener, hammered 63 off 75 balls includ- ing seven fours and a six. Captain Mohammad Azharuddin (81) and Vinod Kambli (82 not out) then held centre stage, adding 100 in just 91 balls for the fourth wicket. Azharuddin cracked four fours and a pair of sixes, and Kambli's innings included three sixes. But viewed in a wider perspective the performence of the UAE, who are playing in an elite company for the first time was indeed a revelation. They struck to their task admirably, waged a spirited battle before bowing a superior team. (from m.n.s) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
