Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:43 CRICKET: NATWEST TROPHY FINAL - Sussex v Warwicks, Lords 4 Sep 93 Dermot Reeve led his Warwickshire side to an incredible victory after they had been set a record breaking total of 322 to win by Sussex. Reeve played a true captain's innings smashing 13 off the first five balls of the last over to set up a dramatic last ball finale. Roger Twose hit the winning runs but it was Reeve unbeaten on 81 and Asif Din (104) who set it up. Earlier David Smith defied injury to hit a superb 124 for Sussex who looked sure to have scored enough. The crowd at Lord's were treated to an amazing day's cricket in which a total of 643 runs were scored as records tumbled like ninepins. When Sussex amassed 321 6 smashing the previous high- est final total by Yorkshire some 28 years ago the outcome looked a formality. But Warwickshire recovered from a dismal 18 2 and got on with the job in hand to register a remarkable and sensational victory. It was the best possible finish to the sea- son but it was a match nobody really deserved to lose. Warwickshire skipper Dermot Reeve was ecstatic with the last ball victory over his former county. I've now won three NatWest fi- nals but this one was the best he said. We plan to let the champagne flow in the dressing room tonight! Even when we needed 15 off the last over I didn't think it was impossible but to chase that sort of total is incredible he added. It was an un- believable performance from the team and Asif Din played magnifi- cently, said Reeve. ====> MORE TWOSE TWO WINS LAST BALL THRILLER Roger Twose cracked two off the last ball to give Warwickshire a stunning five wicket victory over Sussex in a thrilling 643 run NatWest Trophy final. Requiring 321 to win after David Smith (124) had led Sussex to a record total 321 6 Warwicks slumped to 18 2 before Paul Smith (60) stopped the rot. His departure saw Asif Din (104) enter the fray and he and Dermot Reeve (81no) saw them reach their sensational target Dennis Amiss called Warwicks' win in the 643 run Natwest Trophy final at Lord's the greatest ever played. The Warwickshire com- mittee chairman was speaking after an astonishing last ball fin- ish at 7.40pm resulted in his side's five wicket victory over Sussex. What can you say about a match like that? he said. It's unbelievable. Sussex coach Norman Gifford said: We're so disappointed to score 321 and lose. ====> MORE Sussex batted first, got off to a flyer - about 70 of the first 11 overs, mainly thanks to Michael Speight. They then steadied down a bit, finishing on 321 from their 60 overs. Crucially, David Smith batted all the way through as opener to the last ball for about 130, but was run out while Sussex attemped a single having failed to make contact. The more senior Warwickshire bowlers Small and Munton took a real pasting. When Warwickshire batted, their two openers Moles and Ratcliffe went quite cheaply (as usual) to leave them at 18-2. Paul Smith made a crucial 60, but the best performance was by Asif Din, who scored about 110 in very quick time, but was out in the penultimate over. Warwicks needed 15 off the last over, or 14 if they didn't lose another wicket and Reeve was on 70 as it started, with Twose, yet to face at the other end. Franklin Stepehenson was the bowler. It was also getting rather dark. The first five balls went for 4,2,2,4 and 1, so they just needed 1 off the last ball from Twose. The field came in, and after about a five minute delay, he chipped it away for two. Thanks to Mike Smith on r.s.c. Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
