However, in the grip of a bit- ing north-easterly, laced with persistent drizzle, it can be the bleakest of venues. In such conditions, the Hampshire players raised a concerted cheer when Mark Nicholas won the toss for the first time in eight attempts this season. All bar Paul Terry and Sean Morris could therefore remain in the comfort of the pavilion for the 30-minute session before rain forced a stoppage. On the resumption, Morris slashed a hard, high catch to the gully off the left arm opener David Mather, allowing Giles White the doubtful privilege of batting until the abandonment after 16 overs.
