Date-stamped : 01 May97 - 06:16 Chilton sweeps up harassed Sussex By Doug Ibbotson at Fenner`s British Univs (217-6) bt Sussex (198) by 19 runs A RETURN of five wickets for 26 runs off 6.3 overs by Mark Chilton, Durham University and Lancashire, hustled Sussex to a humiliating 19-run defeat at Fenner`s. But, remarkable as was this Gold Award-winning performance, a decisive contribution was the sheer astringency of Stefan Jones, associated with Glamorgan but as yet uncapped by Cambridge. It was Jones who first stimulated coach Derek Randall`s belief that British Universities, having raised a modest 217 for six on a perfect pitch, could achieve only their fourth victory against county opposition in 10 years. Jones, said the jubilant Randall, had "bowled out of his skin" in conceding only 22 runs off 10 overs, four of them maidens, for the wicket of Keith Greenfield. It was indeed significant in as much that Sussex, as captain Peter Moores conceded, were systematically pressurised and ultimately driven to desperate strokeplay against the persistently taunting Chilton. The outcome, with overs slipping away, was the collapse of the last seven wickets for 74 runs and a Universities` victory with nine balls unused. There was some delightful strokeplay by Ed Smith (43), deft technique from Tim Hodgson (41), Chilton (34) and Will House (24), but equally there was naivety in milking field placings, run-calling and general awareness. But when it came to concerted application in the field, to relentlessly nagging bowling without recourse to desperate ambition, the students proved superbly `professional`.
