Date-stamped : 07 May97 - 06:16 Glamorgan welcome Waqar By Edward Bevan at Cardiff Ireland (74-3) v Glamorgan WAQAR Younis became a Welshman yesterday when he was awarded his county cap shortly before making his debut for Glamorgan on a miserable day at Sophia Gardens where rain ended play for the day after only 20.5 overs of Ireland`s innings. The Pakistan opening bowler, who plays his first championship game for the county at Headingley tomorrow bowled five rapid overs, frequently beating the outside edge, said afterwards he "was relishing the opportunity of making an impact with Glamorgan". He has also been sponsored by a national insurance company who have agreed to pay him 200 a wicket once he exceeds 100 wickets in all competitions and a further bonus payment if the county win a trophy this season. Waqar`s presence is also likely to benefit Steve Watkin, who in recent seasons has spearheaded Glamorgan`s new-ball attack almost singlehanded, and he was rewarded in his first over when Andrew Patterson skied a mistimed drive to mid-off. Ireland lost two further wickets, but Hansie Cronje soon adapted to the slow pitch, striking five boundaries. Glamorgan cruised to victory against Ireland with 19.3 overs to spare but Welsh hopes will not have been raised in view of Middlesex`s poor one-day record this season. Gold award winner Hansie Cronje gave Ireland a glimmer of hope with a forceful innings of 85 from 92 balls which included three sixes. But once he skied a return catch to Adrian Dale, the innings quickly folded. Cronje`s sixes were struck off Robert Croft but the Glamorgan all-rounder responded by twice lifting the South African captain over the ropes in his opening over as Glamorgan galloped to 73 in nine overs before losing their first wicket. Croft, who opened the innings as Glamorgan`s pinch- hitter, scored his 43 runs from only 28 balls before departing in the over after Hugh Morris was yorked by Paddy McCrum. Dale and Matthew Maynard then added 91 for the third wicket against a tidy but hardly threatening Irish attack and when Maynard was caught on the long-on boundary, Glamorgan required only 13 runs to win their second game in the competition.
