Date-stamped : 10 Aug97 - 11:37 Sussex v Leicestershire Third day of four: Sussex 330-6 dec v Leics AFTER more than three inches of rain - as much as Eastbourne normally gets in a month - washed out the first two days, no one knew what to expect from a still soggy pitch, writes Peter Dee- ley. Leicestershire gambled by putting Sussex in and two men domi- nated - off-spinner Adrian Pierson, who sent down 42 overs to finish with three for 122 and Neil Taylor, who reached his third century of the season for the home side in five hours. Sussex gambled by playing only five specialist batsman. They have been out for less than 75 four times in the last eight in- nings but this time Taylor`s watchfulness, helped by half-cen- turies from Kei- th Newell and Paul Jarvis, took them to a position of comparative strength. The captains are expected to forfeit an innings today so Leices- tershire could still be in the driving seat, given their ability to chase runs. Pierson took three wickets before lunch but a rash of injuries did not help the visitors` cause. Their captain, James Whitaker, stood down with a cracked toe, Neil Johnson passed a late fit- ness test but then could not bowl because of ankle ligament troubles and Alan Mullally went off with a hamstring injury. They used nine bowlers, including wicket-keeper Paul Nixon and debutant Darren Stevens, who was played for his batting but claimed a wicket when he had Jarvis caught at mid-off.
