Date-stamped : 22 Sep97 - 06:21 Young at heart of this revival By David Green at Bristol First day of four: Lancs (24-2) trail Gloucs (262) by 238 runs GLOUCESTERSHIRE, at one point 20 for three, a position they have become fairly accustomed to in recent seasons, were rescued by Shaun Young`s 100 and an obdurate 38 from Jack Russell. Lancashire`s attack, which has lacked Wasim Akram, was without Peter Martin through a neck strain. Ian Austin, though, deputised splendidly with the new ball, taking the first three wickets for four runs in 18 balls. Austin finished with the best bowling figures of four for 44. Glenn Chapple bowled steadily, as did Gary Keedy, who spun the ball on a dampish surface, gave it air at times and deserved bet- ter than his two for 68. Mark Alleyne must have had second thoughts about deciding to bat on a humid autumnal morning when Dominic Hewson edged Austin to Warren Hegg and Tim Hancock, having survived an lbw appeal first ball, edged his second to first slip. Austin, hitting the pitch hard at around medium-fast, then had Matt Windows lbw pushing half forward but the pressure came off when Darren Shadford relieved him, Young and Bobby Dawson taking 33 from his first three overs. Young, essentially watchful but driving and cutting powerfully whenever possible, once more showed himself an immensely valu- able cricketer. Gloucestershire`s decision to replace him as next season`s overseas player with Courtney Walsh must have been desperately close. Young put on 89 with Dawson and 62 with Russell before mishit- ting to mid-off having hit 16 fours off 174 balls. Gloucester- shire`s tail wagged briskly, with useful contributions coming from Jon Lewis and Richard Davis. Lancashire had 45 minutes to face during which Mike Atherton hooked Lewis for six and Nathan Wood, caught at slip, and night- watch- man Shadford, lbw, became Mike Smith`s 79th and 80th first-class victims this season. Russell has 892 catches and 108 stumpings from 367 matches. John Lewis took five for 55 as Lan- cashire were all out for 203, 59 runs behind Gloucestershire. Despite John Crawley`s fluent 78 and attractive innings from Neil Fairbrother and Ian Austin, Lan- cashire, set 288 to win in 72 overs, faltered near the end. Though Lancashire lost Mike Atherton early on, they looked favourites while Crawley was adding 82 for the third wicket with Fair- brother.
