Date-stamped : 25 Jun97 - 06:18 Gadsby overwhelmed By Paul Newman at Wisbech Hampshire (321-4) bt Cambridgeshire (82) by 239 runs NIGEL GADSBY, Cambridgeshire`s long-serving captain, remembers with affection his appearance alongside fellow Felsted School old boy, John Stephenson, in the Cricketer Cup. "John and I opened for the Robins with Nick Knight at three and Derek Pringle at four," said Gadsby. "I seem to remember we won." How he could have done with such riches yesterday. Two of Gadsby`s old colleagues were at Wisbech, but his prob- lem was that Stephenson was now in charge of his opponents and Pringle was in the press tent. Consequently, Cambridgeshire were comprehen- sively outplayed. It is not easy for part-timers to restrict the likes of Robin Smith and Matt Hayden, but Cambridgeshire`s bowlers made a de- cent fist of it before Hampshire broke into a gallop. Smith was dropped on two, survived a run-out scare on the same score and chipped just over mid-on at 30 before carving his way to 126. Hayden, meanwhile, took his time before showing why he is the country`s leading run-scorer with a powerful 90. Still, they had probably never faced an attack which included an RAF flying officer in Chris Whyborn and a farmer in Tim Smith, who breeds llamas and ostriches. Such exoticism was no match for the professionalism of Stephenson, who took five for 34 as Cam- bridgeshire limped to 82 before they were put out of their misery.
