Date-stamped : 25 Jun97 - 06:18 Croft on a new high By Edward Bevan at Cardiff Glamorgan (182-3) bt Bedfordshire (179-9) by 7 wkts BEDFORDSHIRE based their decision to bat first on the theory that the Sophia Gardens wicket would deteriorate, but they mis- read the situation and there was never any prospect of them cre- ating an upset after being kept below 200. Indeed, the Glamorgan bowlers took full advantage of a seaming pitch, with five of the first six Bedfordshire batsmen misjudging the line and departing leg before. Their hopes of a substantial total rested with Wayne Larkins but the former England opener was out in Steve Watkin`s first over, attempting to flick a straight ball through midwicket. Bedfordshire were indebted to their tail-enders who added 68 for the last two wickets. Robert Croft again relished his role of pinch hitter and cele- brated his elevation yesterday to the Bardic Circle at this year`s Royal National Eisteddfod by striking 64 from 58 balls which includ- ed 10 boundaries. Matthew Maynard and Tony Cottey guided Glamorgan to victory and a second- round tie at Southampton.
