Date-stamped : 25 Jun97 - 06:18 Stewart times it right By Geoffrey Dean at the Oval Surrey (251-5) bt Durham (247-7) by 5 wkts IT WAS just Durham`s luck to be drawn against Surrey instead of a minor county, and though they once hinted at 275 plus, even that would have been 50 below par. Surrey`s pursuit was seldom more than a leisurely stroll. Durham`s best, perhaps only, chance would have been to have bowled first in helpful early conditions, but they lost the toss and were given a probing examination by Martin Bicknell and Chris Lewis. John Morris (75 off 114 balls) and David Boon sur- vived the new ball through good fortune and some umpiring lenien- cy, but went on to play some glorious shots in a 117-run stand. Morris`s dismissal to a brilliant diving catch off an inside edge by Alec Stewart proved crucial. Boon (57 off 108 balls) now had to bat until the closing overs, but in the 47th he came down the wicket to Ian Salisbury and was bowled by one that went straight on. Salisbury`s 12 overs, delivered con- secu- tively with barely a bad ball, were worthy of commendation. Some immensely powerful hitting from Michael Foster (57 not out from 40 balls) at least gave Durham something to bowl at. But some loose new ball fare got Surrey off to a flier with 100 posted in the 20th over. Man of the match Stewart (90 not out off 118 deliveries) timed the ball exquisitely, and with Ally Brown repeatedly powering drives through extra cover, victory came with more than 11 overs to spare.
