Date-stamped : 28 Apr97 - 06:19 AXA Life League: Lewis puts bite into Surrey By D. J. Rutnagur Surrey (181-7) bt Somerset (180) by three wickets THANKS to Chris Lewis, unbeaten with 68 off 64 balls, the champions were able to live up to their unofficial Sunday League title of Surrey Lions, winning off the last ball, a legside wide by Michael Burns. This exciting victory will do more to bring crowds to the Oval than the various gimmicks - among them musical accompaniment for incoming batsmen, a lion dressed up in the county`s strip, a clown on stilts and a master of ceremonies who kept stating the obvious. Somerset, put in, owed their viable score to Richard Harden`s 53 off 71 balls. Surrey`s innings started with Alistair Brown rattling the sabre. But he did not last long and Rose and then Caddick not only restrained the champions, but made deep inroads. Just past the halfway mark, Surrey were 69 for five. The revival started with a partnership of 51 for the sixth wicket in 12 overs between Lewis and Nadeem Shahid. Ian Salisbury proved a doughty ally for Lewis during the final thrust.
