Date-stamped : 28 Apr97 - 06:19 AXA Life League: Sussex floodlight plan put in shade By Peter Deeley at Hove Northants (162-1) bt Sussex (160) by 9 wkts SUSSEX are racing to stage the first competitive floodlit county game but on the evidence of this drubbing by Northamptonshire they might do better hiding their limited-overs light games under the proverbial bushel. Acting chief executive Tony Pigott hopes to have temporary lights installed for the Sunday League game against Essex on Monday, June 16, which would be moved to five o`clock in the evening. This would be earlier than the floodlit games already arranged at the Oval and Edgbaston. He is trying to arrange television coverage, and the club need to raise between 20,000-30,000 to meet the cost of the operation. Another problem is the opposition likely from residents of the flats which surround the ground. One has already complained that the evening start might affect his bridge night. The ambitious plan is another example of the new go- ahead management, but while Sussex may be joint top of the championship after one game, Northants look the form side when it comes to the one-day trophies. It hardly seemed to matter that wicketkeeper Warren Russell had to leave the field after eight overs with a damaged finger that will entail an X-ray today. After Sussex had made a promising start with Keith Greenfield and Keith Newell taking them to 85 for one, off-spinner Jeremy Snape - on his 24th birthday - made tremendous inroads with four wickets from his last 12 deliveries. His Sunday best four for 31 was instrumental in five Sussex wickets going down in the middle of their innings for nine runs and their last man departed with nearly five overs to go. Then Mal Loye and Tony Penberthy cruised to an opening partnership of 149, reaching the century in 20 overs. This is the season when Loye, 24, needs to match the high expectations of him. Penberthy on this form is a real find - not just as a pinch-hitter - to share the opening job with Loye. He gave one chance but shared top billing in a Northants` win which came with almost 10 overs to spare.
