Date-stamped : 19 May97 - 06:16 Middlesex v Derbyshire Middlesex(179-6) beat Derbyshire (178) by 4 wickets MIKE GATTING spent Saturday evening helping to pick the England one-day party in which Phillip DeFreitas returns to international cricket. Then he spent yesterday raising doubts about the wisdom of the selection, writes Paul Newman. DeFreitas conceded 24 runs off his last 11 balls at Lord`s, 17 of them to the Middlesex captain and England selector who produced the sort of emphatic innings many thought was confined to his past. Gatting oozed authority as he thumped an unbeaten 82 from 83 balls to take Middlesex to a four-wicket victory that, with 10 overs remaining and 79 runs still needed, looked beyond them. This was Gatting`s highest score against a county this year, a season which will decide whether he will play on after he relinquishes the Middlesex captaincy in September. His gleeful punch of the air as he scored the 10th run required from DeFreitas`s last over showed how important it was to him. Victory would not, however, have been possible but for the energetic contribution of David Nash, the England Under-19 wicketkeeper playing as a batsman and a scurrying partner for Gatting in the frenetic run chase.
