Date-stamped : 26 May97 - 06:15 Gloucestershire v Essex Essex (142-5) beat Gloucester (139) by 5 wickets ESSEX made light work of overhauling Gloucestershire`s inadequate total of 139 at Gloucester. A delightful innings of 58 by Stuart Law established the high tempo which brought Essex victory by five wickets with 13 overs to spare and kept intact their unbeaten record in one-day games this season, writes Clive Ellis. Law managed a fluency of stroke which was beyond anyone on the Gloucestershire side. His fifty came off only 42 balls and when he lobbed a return catch to slow left-armer Richard Davis, the job was all but done. Gloucestershire`s Mark Alleyne brought a gloss of respectability in a spell of three for 24 but the damage had been done earlier as Essex`s six-man attack maintained admirable control. Jack Russell persevered to make 35 while off-spinner Peter Such was the most economical Essex bowler.
