Date-stamped : 02 Jun97 - 14:17 Gallian takes the wheel in cruise for Lancashire By Paul Newman at Leicester Lancashire (259-5) bt Leicestershire (258-5) by 5 wkts FEW teams can pace a one-day chase as well as Lancashire. They provided a perfect example yesterday, aided by some indiffer- ent Leicestershire bowling, to maintain their perfect Sunday record. A target of 259 should have tested Lancashire. As it was Jason Gallian`s second century on successive Sundays saw them cruise home with eight balls to spare. They remain, despite this sea- son`s Benson and Hedges Cup hiccup, England`s premier one-day force. Gallian was able to eschew risks while still clumping the mediocre Leicestershire fare to most parts of an unusually well- popu- lated Grace Road in his 104 off 100 balls, falling unex- pectedly just three runs from the winning post. The end, though, came soon enough, appropriately when Neil Johnson added a no-ball to his earlier eight wides, a delivery which nevertheless caught the umpires by surprise as they al- lowed him to bowl another ball before realising Lancashire had won. Leicestershire had their chances, notably when Gordon Parsons dismissed Mike Atherton and John Crawley in successive balls to leave Lancashire at 50 for three in the 10th over. Any semblance of struggle, however, was soon forgotten when Graham Lloyd began reverse-pulling with vigour and Gallian continued on his serene path, Neil Fairbrother helping him complete the job with a typically well nudged and nurdled half-century. Home consolation came in the form of another impressive con- tribution from Darren Maddy, who sparkled in a partnership of 144 with his captain, James Whitaker.
