Date-stamped : 09 Jun97 - 06:16 AXA Life League: Durham victory is farce By Tim Wellock at Chester-le-Street Durham (216-6) beat Sussex (57-4) by 62 runs FARCE and drama combined to present Durham with their second Sunday League win of the season at Chester-le-Street and left Sussex captain Peter Moores pondering a protest. First Sussex were kept out in pouring rain by umpires David Constant and Chris Balderstone in order to achieve a result, then after a 100-minute break they were asked to score 80 runs in four overs to win. Moores, who went in to bat on the resumption, helped Mark Newell add 17 runs in three overs then showed his displeasure by blocking out the final over. Under the Duckworth/Lewis method of deciding rain-affected matches, Durham won by 62 runs after scoring 216 for six to which Sus- sex replied with 57 for four. Ten overs of Sussex`s reply had to be completed for a result to be declared and rain was starting to fall as James Boiling began the 10th over. It had become a downpour by the time Keith Greenfield was caught at square leg off the final ball to leave Sussex in a hopeless position on 39 for four. There was a triple Sunday best for Durham, with their highest 40-over total at the Riverside Ground being founded on personal bests by David Boon (76) and John Lewis (69 not out). They put on 116 for the fourth wicket and after struggling to 124 after 30 overs Durham took 93 off the last 10. With Paul Jarvis ruled out by his Achilles tendon problem, Sussex welcomed back James Kirtley after injury but he conceded 53 runs off his eight overs. While the win was welcome, the downpour brought an unsatisfac- tory end to the first of Durham`s Family Fun Days, which they plan to repeat on July 13 and Aug 3.
