Date-stamped : 23 Jun97 - 06:17 Durham falter in run chase By Tim Wellock at Darlington Kent (141) beat Durham (125) by 16 runs IT might have been the winter solstice, such was the gloom which enveloped Feethans yesterday and helped Kent to end their vis- it to the north east on a brighter note with a 16-run win against Durham. Following Saturday`s championship defeat they were staring down the barrel of their second successive Sunday League set- back when John Morris launched Durham`s reply to 141 all out with 47 at a run a ball. Despite his exit, Durham were coasting at 58 for two in the 13th over, but it coincided with the arrival of dark clouds and drizzle and in the next nine overs two more wickets went down for the addi- tion of only 12 runs. Had a red ball been in use the players would surely have come off. But Jon Lewis is seeing any type of ball with perfect clar- ity and he followed his 158 not out in the championship match with an in- nings of 34 before Martin McCague yorked him. Though they needed only 24 off nine overs with four wickets left, Lewis`s departure proved to be Durham`s death-knell as Matthew Fleming nipped in with three quick wickets and James Boiling was run out with 5.4 overs unused. As the prepared strip was too damp for use, the same pitch was used as in the championship match, which partly accounted for the low scoring. Kent`s struggles after winning the toss, however, were also a re- flection of the vast improvement in the Durham bowling since last week`s scathing criticism from Geoff Arnold, one of their ad- visers. John Wood, who bore the brunt of the attack after taking nought for 65 in 10 overs at Fenner`s the previous Sunday, was brought in for his first AXA match of the season and both he and Alan Walker pro- duced Sunday best figures. Wood had four for 17 and Walker four for 18, and the only Kent batsman to play with any fluency was Graham Cowdrey in his first in- nings since straining a hamstring while making 81 not out at Trent Bridge three weeks ago. He included an enormous straight six off Boiling into the football ground in making 46 off 62 balls.
