Date-stamped : 23 Jun97 - 06:17 Surrey made to suffer as Haynes leads way By Mike Beddow at Worcester Worcs (150-3) bt Surrey (149) by 7 wkts SURREY`S view from a window in Worcester`s wet weather re- mained bleak: their three England batsmen away at Lord`s and all the other specialists dismissed in an embarrassing collapse to 36 for seven. Enter Martin Bicknell, soon to be joined by Saqlain Mushtaq at 59 for eight. They put on 83 in 16 overs and Bicknell`s undefeated 57 more than doubled his highest score in 129 previous Sunday appear- ances. The recovery, as inspired as it was surprising, nursed Surrey past their lowest League score of 64, then took them to a re- spectable 149. Not sufficient to deny Worcestershire - they beat the champi- ons with 8.3 overs to spare - but a bigger test than they would have imagined when Gavin Haynes took four for 13. The pitch, which was used for a rain-aborted championship match, had changed character after 2.5 days under the cov- ers. Haynes moved the ball around for three catches behind the wicket and also ac- counted for Jason Ratcliffe, who made 22. Worcestershire`s early progress also became fraught when Chris Lewis held a skimming drive from Graeme Hick at extra cover, but Haynes and Reuben Spiring were dropped during a match-winning partnership of 93. Haynes completed an excellent all round day with 47 not out. Source :: The Electronic Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
