A third-wicket partner- ship of 80 between Bill Athey, who made a gallant 56, and Mark Newell was the lifeblood of the innings. After they were separated Sussex`s remaining wickets fell for only 24 runs, Waqar Younis, taking three of them for one run in eight balls. A flurry of blows by pinch-hitter Robert Croft - one of them a six into the Mumbles Road - gave Glamorgan a blazing start, 27 runs coming from the first three overs.
