A  commanding  century  stand by Northants openers Tony Penberthy
and Alan Fordham was almost squandered at Northampton  where Sur-
rey,  having  scored  206  for seven, pushed the home side to the
third ball of the final over. Penberthy confirmed his  fine  all-
round form of re- cent days, with an undefeated 81.

Northants`   performance   in  the field had been notable for the
accurate and incisive bowling of Mohammad Akram, who clearly ben-
efited  from  Thursday`s  public  coaching  session by John Embu-
rey. He took four for 19 off eight overs.
