Date-stamped : 04 Aug97 - 14:31 Derbyshire depressed by Durham By Tim Wellock at Chester-le-Street Durham (185-5) bt Derbyshire (181-9) by 5 wkts DURHAM eased the workload on the irrepressible Jon Lewis yes- terday but still needed their man of the moment to apply the finishing touches to a Sunday League win over Derbyshire, which was achieved with two overs to spare. With a long tail to come, Durham were in a potentially tricky position when David Boon suffered a rush of blood just when he seemed to have everything under control. Having made 43, the Australian went down the track to Matthew Vandrau and was stumped by yards to leave his side on 120 for four in the 27th over. There were no further alarms, however, as Lewis and Mike Rose- berry scurried through a stand of 61, before Lewis was caught at slip for 36 with the scores level. He had scored a century the previous Sunday, when opening at Cheltenham, but this time he went in at No 5 after Boon and Martin Speight had done the hard work in a stand of 88. Defeat completed a depressing weekend for Derbyshire, who were without Dominic Cork because of illness. After being put in, they struggled to come to terms with the pitch and only a late flourish by Phillip DeFreitas, with 45 off 29 balls, carried them to a respectable total. Careless driving was at the root of their troubles as a promising start faltered when Chris Adams drove to short-cover and Vince Clarke to mid-off. James Boiling`s off-spin stifled the middle of the innings while Adrian Rollins and Kim Barnett fell when well set to Melvyn Betts, who finished with three for 22. Durham also struggled early in their innings against the left- arm inswing of Kevin Dean, who removed John Morris and Stewart Hutton. But Boon took a liking to the bowling of Paul Aldred, whose seven overs cost 52 runs. Source :: The Electronic Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
