Surrey v Durham

Surrey (190-3) bt Durham (189-9) by 7 wkts

SURREY,  the  Sunday  champions, had lost any chance of retaining
their title with poor recent form before  yesterday,   but   they
made sure Durham could retain the wooden spoon.

There   was   little   at the Oval to please David Boon, Durham`s
Australian captain, until his gesture of delight at  around  7pm,
when  the public address announced England`s Ashes demise.

Martin  Bicknell  took  four cheap wickets, in Sunday terms, with
his swing-bowling, which left Durham with a lower total than they
could  realistically  protect, despite Michael Roseberry`s 55 not
out off 56 balls, his best first-team score since April.

Mark Butcher`s anchor 81 in reply  allowed   Surrey   to   cruise
home at their leisure.
