Date-stamped : 09 Sep97 - 06:08 Tuesday 9 September 1997 AXA Life League: Wild Walker stumped by final outcome By Peter Deeley at Northampton Northants (186-5) bt Durham (185-6) by 5 wkts A DURHAM player`s angry flattening of a stump with his boot at the end of this game exemplified the county`s frustration as their hopes of a very rare win disappeared in the evening sun- shine. Alan Walker`s wayward last over, the 39th, had brought 12 runs for Northamptonshire`s sixth-wicket pair, with Tim Walton hitting the winning boundary, when at one stage the home side needed to score at well over a run a ball. Walker`s eight overs cost 48 runs but equally culpable was John Wood in putting down a chance to dismiss Walton which would have swung the odds heavily back in Durham`s favour. Before this game Durham had won both Sunday League games on this ground and they seemed on for a hat-trick for much of the con- test. Until the final overs their bowling was disciplined and the fielding tigerish - perhaps owing something to the tongue-lashing from captain David Boon after a poor performance 24 hours earlier. Northamptonshire`s victory owed much to the steadiness of Richard Mont- gomerie, who batted through the innings, his 86 coming off 113 balls. Montgomerie added 68 in 10 overs with Wal- ton, whose 41 came off only 35 deliveries. Boon had scored his second league half-century of the summer.
