Date-stamped : 08 Sep97 - 02:08 AXA League Round-Up: Anwar`s arrival to lighten Derbyshire gloom Northamptonshire (146-3) beat Derbyshire (145-9) by 7 wkts DERBYSHIRE`S wretched season brought more failure and upheaval yesterday, this unpalatable mixture leavened only by confirma- tion that Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar has been signed as their overseas player for next summer. The final details of Anwar`s contract, which could extend to the end of the 2000 season, were ironed out in talks between his En- glish representatives and Derbyshire chairman Vic Brown over the weekend. The chances of the 29-year-old left-hander finding the county at peace, however, lessened with an announcement that Phil DeFre- itas, who has led the side since Dean Jones decamped in June, would "not be considered for the captaincy in 1998". A "hurt and disappointed" DeFreitas will continue until the end of the season, when Derbyshire will hand the reins to ei- ther Karl Krikken or Dominic Cork. Results have hardly enhanced DeFreitas`s claim, but he said: "Considering we`ve had no over- seas player, Dominic Cork has been injured and Devon Malcolm has been on Test duty, I think I`ve been harshly judged." Morale has hit rock bottom during two defeats by Northants, who followed up Friday`s championship success by confining Der- byshire to a beggarly 145 for nine, with Scotland seamer John Blain taking five for 24. David Sales`s brisk unbeaten 42 propelled Northants to victory with more than 12 overs to spare.
