Rusty England go down to Bradman XI in one-dayer

BOWRAL, Australia, Jan 1 (AFP) - Underprepared England, needing
fill-ins from Australian clubs to boost their ranks, lost by 51 runs
to a Bradman XI here Friday in a warm-up match for this month's
triangular one-day cricket series against Australia and Sri Lanka.
Captain Adam Hollioake hit 67 off 67 balls but ran out of partners.
Half the one-day team had only just arrived from the northern winter
and the other half had taken little part in the current Ashes Test
series.
Gavin Hamilton and Ian Salisbury were summoned from grade cricket in
Melbourne and Sydney to fill in for the undermanned England team.
``We're still pretty jetlagged, a bit weary and flat,'' said Hollioake.
``We only got in on Monday and had a 6:00 a.m. flight out of Brisbane
yesterday plus New Year's Eve last night.
``Once we get some time in the nets and the full squad's together we'll
be a different team.''
England was bowled out for 187 chasing the Bradman XI's 238 for six,
with former Australian Test offspinner Greg Matthews starring with
4-33 off 8.1 overs.
Young New South Wales Sheffield Shield batsman Corey Richards hit an
impressive 62 but the Bradman XI needed 82 from the last 10 overs to
set a decent target.
The murky day was lit up by some bold hitting from Scott Thompson (38)
and wicketkeeper Phil Emery (37 not out).
Thompson took 19 off Vince Wells' third over, hitting one six halfway
to Bradman's old house which borders the ground.
England's best bowler was seamer Angus Fraser, rising 33 and this week
awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Years honours.
The sheer pace of Brett Lee then sent back opener Nick Knight for nine
and the dangerous Ben Hollioake for eight, courtesy of an overhead
catch by former Australian Test medium pacer Mike Whitney at mid-on.
England start the triangular series against Australia in Brisbane on
January 10.
