The Electronic Telegraph Cambridge University v Lancashire
The Electronic Telegraph - 8-10 April 1999

Day 2: Chilton is quick off the mark

Charles Randall at Fenner's

Second day of three: Cambridge University (261-7 dec & 32-6) lead Lancashire (245-1 dec) by 48 runs.

Mark Chilton, starting his first full season at Lancashire, scored his maiden first-class hundred - the earliest on record in an English season - and hinted at why the club have such high hopes for him.

Chilton, upright and rangy, graduated from Durham University last year, having represented Combined Universities as an all-rounder with distinction against the professionals in the Benson and Hedges Cup. Though he took ages over his fifty yesterday, his second fifty arrived in only 48 balls.

Charles Pimlott, a Lancashire second-team player, was a steady new-ball bowler and the South African left-arm spinner, Ken Walker, took a wicket with his first ball in first-class cricket, but Chilton and Paddy McKeown had few scares.

Graham Lloyd, Lancashire's stand-in captain, declared behind, inviting a contest, and the impressive pace of Michael Smethurst and Richard Green gave the students a torrid evening session, five wickets falling in 21 balls for no runs.
