The Electronic Telegraph Warm-up: Durham v Scotland
The Electronic Telegraph - 8 May 1999

Scotland fell just two runs short of victory in an exciting finish at the Riverside, after David Boon and John Lewis had helped Durham to set them a stiff target.

Boon hit six fours and a six in a blistering 50 off 65 balls while Lewis finished unbeaten on 77 as Durham reached 238 for five from their 48 overs.

Yet Scotland, 500-1 outsiders for the World Cup, did not go down without a fight. Mike Smith and Gavin Hamilton shared a tremendous century partnership and at one stage looked likely to win the game.

Smith hit 61 before being stumped by Andy Pratt, while Hamilton made an unbeaten 91. The Yorkshire all-rounder needed a boundary off the final ball, but could manage only a single.
