South Africa won by 83 runs
Graeme Smith thus notches up his first win as captain in only his
second match, and a heartening one after a thumping loss to India
yesterday.
Bangladesh go down to their 34th successive one-day loss, a record
that does not look like being nipped in the bud any time soon.
Though they put up more of a fightback today than against India,
lasting all but three balls of the innings, they never looked in
the chase in pursuit of 295.
South Africa set up the win early enough, with a sterling batting
performance after choosing to bat first. Each of their top five
batsmen got a good knock in.
Their bowlers struggled initially as Ashraful and Habibul tonked
the ball around freely. Some late-order fireworks from Khaled
Mahmud notwithstanding, the batting was lacklustre through the
rest of the innings
So South Africa move into the second slot in the points tabel in
this TVS Cup, behind India with their two wins.
Bangladesh pick up one bonus point from this match, by virtue of
preventing South Africa from getting it!
Man of the Match: Mohammad Ashraful, for, in the words of the
presenter, "taking the attack to the South Africans"
The next game comes up on Wednesday, the 16th, when Bangladesh take
on India, starting at 1:30 p.m. IST (8:00 a.m. GMT).
Till then, goodbye
